Wine Suggestions From Vineyard Travels

Written by JoAnn Actis-Grande

Wine CountryNow that the weather is cooler, I find myself wanting to spend much more time at home in the kitchen and very close to the wine cabinet in order to create new menus to serve with the wines I have discovered while traveling. Recently, I spent time in California, including on the central coast where Paso Robles is located, and where you still can find acres and acres of rolling farmland and lush vineyards. Another trip took me to Italy and Sicily where so much of the itinerary revolved around eating and drinking. During this time of year, you too can embrace the joy of welcoming family and friends around your table to share the wonders of entertaining while enjoying new wines. The following wines can be found in and around New England or ordered directly from the wineries, and all are good values for their extremely high quality.

Bollinger, Champagne Special Cuvée

This French champagne is the purest expression of the rich and famous Bollinger style. A dry, full-bodied wine that has aromas and flavors of gentle rose, ripe citrus and lightly toasted nuts. The taste is delicious and the aftertaste long-lasting. The perfect bubbly for special occasions such as New Year’s and Valentine’s Day.

Imported, Bisol Crede Prosecco

An Italian wine that’s full of life. This Prosecco distinguishes itself from other wines by boasting an extreme freshness filled with exotic fruit notes and perfect acidity. The abundance of fine bubbles are a lively masterpiece. Serve alone as an apertif or pair with fish dishes.

Tablas Creek, Esprit de Beaucastel Blanc 2008

The flagship wine of Tablas Creek Vineyards from Paso Robles. A white wine that has sumptuous aromas of orange marmalade, lemon blossom and white currants along with spice, crushed rock and subtle earthy notes. This is a full-bodied wine, rich in flavor and perfect served with cheese, fish and chicken.

Planeta, La Segreta Rosso

This young, fresh wine is produced mainly from Nero d’Avola grapes, the flagship grape of Sicilian wine. It has a ruby red color and an intense red currant and raspberry blend flavor with cacao and toasted coffee notes. It is the perfect introduction to Sicilian wine with its excellent connection between price and quality. A great everyday wine to accompany any meal.

Justin Vineyard, Justification 2007

A great wine from a gorgeous winery located on the central coastal area of Paso Robles. It’s a big, bright and powerful red wine made from a blend of Bordeaux grapes and holds aromas of currant, black tar, leather and cedar. The flavors are extremely approachable, finding tastes of red currant, blackberry, cedar, caramel and cinnamon. The wine is elegant from start to finish and best paired with meat dishes.

Zaca Mesa, Mesa Reserve Syrah 2006

This winery crafts Rhone varietal wines with character and integrity from grapes sustainably grown. The syrah is deeply extracted and displays aromas and flavors of ripe blackberries, strong coffee, cassis, tobacco and oak as well as sage. This wine is dense and bold with a powerful presence on the palate and a hearty finish. A great choice with eggplant dishes, pasta, lamb and veal.

Vina Robles, Petite Sirah Jardine 2007

Produced at a fabulous state-of-the-art winery in Paso Robles, fast becoming one of California’s leading producers of petite sirah, this grape variety excels in the region. This wine has spicy aromas and a big, rich, spicy cedar texture along with extracted blackberry fruit, full tannins and a lingering aftertaste. Enjoy with duck, grilled and barbequed foods.

Trefethen, Cabernet Sauvignon

A Napa Valley signature wine. This cabernet sauvignon has delicate aromas of coffee and black cherry with hints of bay leaf that carry through to the last sip, adding firm tannins and flavors of ripe plum and walnut. Delicious with beef, lamb and game dishes.

Marchesi  de’ Frescobaldi, Nipozzano Riserva

A Tuscan wine produced mostly from sangiovese grapes. A wine where its aromatics show great finesse and complexity, opening to dark fruits of plum and black currant, followed by traces of cinnamon and clove. Goes well with barbecued meats, stews and aged cheeses.

J. Lohr Paso Robles, Zinfandel

A lovely dark plum color, this wine is bursting with expression full of concentrated fruits with aromas ranging from raspberry and blackberry to tobacco and chocolate. On your tongue, tastes of black pepper spice come forward. The wine shows its best when paired with foods accented with herbs or spices and is great served with hot sausage, zesty pasta and even chocolate desserts.

Wine Suggestions for Crisp Days and Nights

Written by JoAnn Actis-Grande

Sipping into FallFall equals harvest season, and it is a great time for sipping fuller wines, especially under the harvest moon. The wines I have selected will complement the dip in temperatures, and pair well with menus featuring hearty foods. Be sure to look for these wines in local Seacoast stores.

White

Francis Coppola Diamond Collection Chardonnay
In his winery, legendary film director Francis Ford Coppola produces an award-winning chardonnay. His Diamond Collection Chardonnay has depth, richness, distinctive spice notes and a smooth, creamy texture. This wine pairs well with fettuccine Alfredo, chicken and pork tenderloin.

J. Lohr Estates Bay Mist White Riesling
Monterey County, 2009

A pale, young wine with brass-like yellow color and enticing fruit aromas of apple, apricot, peach and Bosc pear. Refreshing acidity and a slight palate spritz. Serve as an aperitif or pair with Pacific Rim cuisine such as Thai chicken, beef satay or grilled soy-marinated salmon.

Hartwell Estate Sauvignon Blanc, 2008
Many great Napa Valley sauvignon blancs are seeking oak to round them out. A sauvignon blanc aged in oak makes this wine very smooth, creamy and vibrant. This wine features a medley of tropical notes—lime, grapefruit and citrus, and a long, lovely finish. An interesting choice with clams, mussels and oysters.

Boutari Moschofilero
The number-one wine in Greece! A brilliant, crystal-clear, light yellow wine with green tints, this is a fresh white with intense floral and fruity melon and citrus aromas. A well-balanced, refreshing wine with fine flavor and a long aromatic aftertaste of orange blossom and grapefruit. Perfect for pairing with seafood.

Maculan Pino & Toi
A combination of indigenous Italian grapes makes this wine intensely perfumed and offers refreshing notes of citrus and apples. It is well-balanced on the palate with loads of aromas of fresh peaches and pears, followed by a crisp and fragrant finish.

Terras Gauda Albarino
A popular Spanish grape varietal wine that is very food-friendly. This wine has an interesting and complex mix of aromas combining white fruits, orange pips and peel with fresh balsamic notes, supported by subtle floral and mineral hints. It enters the mouth smoothly, progressing towards a pleasant, sticky sweetness, accompanied by fresh, bright acidity and concluding with a fleshy finish in the mouth, long and creamy.

Red

Francis Coppola Rosso Shiraz, 2008
Another wine produced by the famous film director’s winery, this red wine is filled with dark, rich fruit flavors and spicy aromatics. Medium-bodied with ripe, smooth tannins, this lush, easy-drinking wine pairs perfectly with grilled lamb chops, chicken pesto panini or pasta with puttanesca sauce.

St. Francis Merlot
This wine has spicy herb and vanilla overtones that give way to luscious plum and cherry flavors on the palate, with hints of chocolate and generous tannins on the finish. A true varietal classic labeled with Sonoma County style. I love this wine with burgers and ribs.

Hoya De Cadenas Reserva Tempranillo
A perfect everyday wine and a great value from Spain. It has a lovely appearance and intense depth with bright vermillion hues. Its bouquet reveals complex aromas of ripe fruit and vanilla. On the palate, you will taste a smooth, velvety wine with an elegant and spicy finish. A great choice for tapas.

Greg Norman California Estates Paso Robles Petite Sirah
Professional golfer Greg Norman makes an outstanding petite sirah that has an inky garnet color and vivid hues of purple. The wine finishes with bright aromas of violets and blackberries. The palate is luscious and full of juicy blackberry, plum and dried fruits. A wine that’s rich and well-structured with nicely integrated velvet tannins.

Jeff Gordon Cabernet Sauvignon, 2005
Produced by the famous racecar driver, this cabernet has bouquets of leather, currant and pipe tobacco. The taste is rich with smoke, cedar, blackberry and stone fruits, and is incredibly smooth. There are touches of espresso on the finish. A wine that will age nicely, this is a good choice for collectors. Always a great wine with steak and chops.

Paradigm Zinfandel, 2007
Bright cherries in the front make way to smoke, spices and a dash of black pepper. Many believe 2007 to be a banner year in Napa Valley and this wine is a great example. Serve with all your favorite harvest stews.
